Dental Crowns in Longwood, Florida
What are Dental Crowns?
Crowns are a restoration used to strengthen a tooth or improve its shape. Crowns are most often used for teeth that are broken, chipped, or worn by tooth decay or other contributing factors.
Crowns are placed onto an existing tooth and fully cover the chewing surface of your tooth. In effect, the crown becomes your tooth's new outer surface. Although crowns have been made out of a multitude of materials historically, crowns are now most commonly made of porcelain. Porcelain crowns are most often preferred because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are very strong.
Crowns are needed when there is insufficient tooth strength remaining to hold a filling or when a tooth is cracked and needs to be reinforced. Unlike fillings, which apply the restorative material directly onto your tooth, a crown is fabricated outside of your mouth by a dental ceramist. Traditionally, dental impressions (molds) were required in the past; Springs Family Dentistry now uses digital impressions for faster, more comfortable, and more accurate results.
Crowns are now less invasive than in the past. Dr. Gessner utilizes the latest ceramic bonding techniques to minimize the amount of tooth structure adjusted during crown appointments. This results in saving between 33-55% of the tooth structure by comparison to traditional crowns.
